The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation reports that 13 of its teams deployed to Ground Zero after the September 11 attacks. Many of those dogs had themselves been rescued.
Their work continues today. The foundation rescues and recruits dogs, trains them for disaster searches, and pairs them with firefighters and other first responders.
One way to remember the dogs who served is to support the search dogs working today.
