About Work From Hound

About the Founder

Karen, founder of Work From Hound

Karen founded Work From Hound after decades of caring for pets, navigating difficult health questions, and wishing it were easier to find clear, practical information.

A Crunchy Pet Mom Who Keeps Asking Questions

Karen gravitates toward natural approaches in her own life and in caring for Bubba, Pearl, Theo, and Max. She reads ingredient lists, researches supplements, and pays attention to the everyday products used throughout her home.

That perspective shapes Work From Hound. She wants natural-minded pet parents to have a place where their questions are taken seriously, their curiosity is welcome, and practical information is easy to understand.

Her approach brings together personal experience, ongoing research, and care from both conventional and holistic veterinary professionals.

Where It Started

Her interest in pet nutrition began more than 30 years ago when her cat was diagnosed with kidney failure. That experience led her to start reading labels, researching nutrition, asking more questions, and looking beyond the most obvious answers.

Her experiences with pet illness, aging, and sudden loss deepened that interest over the years. She has cared for pets with kidney disease, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, hemangiosarcoma, and breed-related breathing problems. Karen sought care from both traditional and holistic veterinary professionals as she made decisions for her pets.

When her first Basset Hound was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, Karen began preparing homemade food for her dogs and became much more intentional about what went into their bowls. Eventually, life became busy, and she moved away from preparing all of their food herself. Later, after losing two dogs to cancer less than a month apart, she found herself revisiting those choices and asking those questions again.

Karen does not claim that food or any particular product caused their cancers. Those experiences did, however, reinforce how difficult it can be for pet parents to sort through ingredients, marketing claims, conflicting opinions, and incomplete evidence while trying to make thoughtful decisions for the pets they love.

That is the thinking behind Work From Hound.

A Background Built Around Questions and Evidence

Karen’s educational background is in technology and teaching. Her career has been at the intersection of regulatory compliance, risk, and cybersecurity. She also holds professional certifications related to information systems auditing and IT risk management.

In that work, she reviews requirements and evidence, assesses risk, and explains what she finds. Writing is a big part of that work, and it is something she genuinely enjoys.

She brings that experience to her role as founder, where she guides what Work From Hound publishes and builds. Her goal is to make difficult, time-consuming research clearer and more useful for pet parents.

How We Verify What We Share

Work From Hound looks for the source behind a claim, starts with primary and authoritative information whenever possible, and says clearly when the answer is still uncertain.

Curiosity That Extends Beyond the Pet Bowl

Karen is also a self-proclaimed biohacker. Her curiosity extends to nutrition, recovery, and everyday wellness for herself and her family.

She participates in pet communities and follows practitioners, researchers, and educators with different perspectives. Those conversations help identify questions for Work From Hound to investigate.

A Mission That Started More Than Twenty Years Ago

More than twenty years ago, Karen started an online pet business that included pet wellness products. That chapter eventually ended, but her interest in helping people make thoughtful choices for their pets never did.

Today, pet parents face a crowded marketplace filled with competing claims and conflicting information.

Work From Hound is the next chapter of that mission.

Why Work From Hound?

The name came from everyday life. Karen works from home with her two Basset Hounds and two Persian cats, each of whom has found a place in the workday.

Pearl has claimed a spot on top of Karen’s desk since she was a puppy. Now about 42 pounds, she still expects her place there every day. She stretches out beside the computer, watches the neighborhood, snoozes through meetings, and frequently lets her tongue hang out.

Bubba usually works from his dog bed nearby, which mostly means napping. Some days, he moves downstairs and works remotely from the couch.

Theo is generally somewhere doing his own thing. Max visits the office occasionally and may curl up with the dogs, but his primary concern is making sure nobody forgets what time dinner is.

Together, Bubba, Pearl, Theo, and Max are the Hound House. These real pets and their everyday lives are at the heart of the company.

This is the real Work From Hound.

The Animals Who Shaped Work From Hound

A personal tribute from Karen to the animals who have shared her life.

Meet Max

Part cat. Part hall monitor. Part little bowling ball.

Max came to us through the ASPCA in 2022 after a cattery became overwhelmed during the pandemic, leaving more than 70 cats in a hoarding situation. When he first came home, he didn’t even know how to walk on carpet.

He still doesn’t jump, but fortunately, he moved into a basset house. We have little steps everywhere for those short basset legs, and Max uses them to reach the couch and bed. The basset infrastructure works for cats, too.

Max is always nearby. Watching. Waiting. Making sure you haven’t forgotten him or, more specifically, forgotten to feed him. He has appointed himself Pearl’s parent and co-owner of her bowl. He squeezes in beside her, and Pearl simply lets him.

He grooms Pearl and occasionally Bubba, who looks like he did not request the service. Max and T are our odd couple: very different beginnings, but they play and get along beautifully.

Every so often, Max tears through the house going, “Arrr!” And if you pass him in the hallway, you may get a little tap-tap on the back of your leg, just to let you know he’s there.

Max is happy to groom everyone else, but being groomed himself is very stressful. That’s why you may see him with a lion cut or looking a little rumpled. We work with what he can handle and let Max be Max.

We joke about the food inspections because he really is funny. But he doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. A little bossy. A little rumpled. Usually hungry. Very, very loved.

Where Work From Hound Is Going

Work From Hound is being developed as a home for practical tools, carefully researched information, and stories from the Hound House.

Bubba & Pearl: The Label Decoders is in founder testing. The tool is designed to help pet parents look beyond the front of the package and better understand the ingredients, claims, and tradeoffs behind everyday pet products.

Healthy Home Decoder is also in founder testing, extending the same careful approach to products used throughout the home.

Around the Water Bowl brings together research, practical guidance, thoughtful questions, and stories inspired by life with the Hound House.
